Despite U.S. sanctions limiting China’s access to the latest chip technology, local companies are finding ways to develop artificial intelligence (AI) through alternative methods. According to the Wall Street Journal, Chinese tech firms are using weaker semiconductors and a combination of chips to bypass reliance on a single type of hardware. While creating alternatives to the most advanced chips on the market will be difficult, some experiments have shown “promise.” Sanctions have deprived Chinese companies of accessing Nvidia’s most popular options in the AI development scene, but they have access to A800 and H800 chips, which are only capable of small-scale AI models. In the race to create the best and most powerful AI system, even local American companies are releasing new AI-powered features for their chatbots and web browsers. Chinese authorities announced an upcoming mandatory review of all generative AI services released within the country before they are allowed to operate publicly.
