According to Brian Armstrong, the CEO of Coinbase, the company is planning to integrate the Lightning network, a layer 2 scaling solution for Bitcoin that allows faster and cheaper transactions. Armstrong made the comment in response to a tweet criticizing Coinbase for “actively ignoring” the network. However, Armstrong did not provide any further details on when the integration would occur or what it would involve.
Coinbase has been criticized in the past for not integrating the Lightning network, but if the company follows through with the integration, it would join Bitfinex, Kraken, and OKX as the largest trading platforms to do so. Coinbase has been more active in the Ethereum ecosystem lately, having launched “Base” on Feb 23, an Ethereum layer 2 application-focused network powered by layer 2 Optimism.
